WVTF-RADIO IQ has an opening for a digitally savvy News Director.
This is an amazing time to shape the future of news creation and delivery in public media as well a chance to develop the long range vision for reporting in Virginia. The News Director sets the editorial policy for our award-winning team of journalists and will direct the daily operation of the news department, including supervision of anchors, reporters, interns, freelance and other content producers.
As a member of the senior leadership team, the News Director will participate in strategic planning to develop a collective vision for WVTF/RADIO IQ, and will work to implement the plan.
The successful candidate will also be the managing director and editor of Virginia Public Radio, a public radio news collaboration serving the Commonwealth, and would ideally serve as a backup host for key programs such as Morning Edition and All Things Considered.
Live in the beautiful Roanoke Valley and direct a news team for an operation that covers a substantial area of Virginia, including Richmond, Fredericksburg, Roanoke/Lynchburg, Charlottesville, New River Valley, Lexington, and SW Virginia.
Morning Edition Host
The local Morning Edition host will be a signature voice for WVTF and RADIO IQ. This key position is responsible for seamlessly conveying the sound and approach taken by NPR’s Morning Edition in the presentation of locally produced newscasts and feature length reports as well as in the announcing during segment breaks in the program in keeping with Public Radio’s Core Values for News/Talk Programming.
The host will be fully responsible for editorial decisions on our most listened to program; this person must use advanced production skills and impeccable broadcast instincts to create a highly listenable and engaging program through the careful editing and use of copy, continuity, promos, breaking-news and interviews.
Additional responsibilities include conducting interviews after Morning Edition for use on the program or other WVTF/RADIO IQ programming as well as light reporting duties. The Morning Edition host will also participate in our on air fund raising campaigns and serve as a public representative of WVTF/RADIO IQ.
