August is Craft Beer Month in Virginia, and this week we’re going to be looking at the commonwealth’s growing industry. 

Nationwide, the number of craft breweries now tops 3,000 - with more opening up every day - and a new Gallup poll analyzing alcohol consumption finds that 11 million more Americans chose beer as their beverage of choice this year than last.

Beer is a booming industry - and Virginia is no exception to the national trend.

Governor McAuliffe has signed an executive order to increase the opportunities for small, women- and minority-owned companies to conduct business with the state. 

The goal is to promote equity—and maximize the participation of small businesses in work that’s obtained through procurement and state contracts.  He also set a high goal for the number of participants.

McAuliffe directed Secretary of Commerce and Trade Maurice Jones to raise the state share of spending that goes to small, women- and minority-owned businesses to 42%.

Starting a business can be complicated, and you might feel ill-prepared without an MBA, but a Charlottesville woman who has the degree decided not to bother with focus groups or financial analysis. 

Instead, she trusted her gut, and is building a company using common sense.

A couple of years ago, an Australian filmmaker named Joe Cross came to America to make a documentary about his quest for better health.  He called it Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.


A Richmond man is one of two grand prize winners in a contest sponsored by Walmart.  A graduate student at Virginia Commonwealth Univeresity, he could soon be on his way to a considerable fortune.

Tumi Oredein describes himself as an inventor, but as a child he showed aptitude for the arts. “As a kid I just loved to draw all the time, and you can go to my house and still see all the drawings on the walls.”
