Emergency Poems

In an emergency, some people turn to drink, while others rely on prayer, but for a small and committed group at the University of Virginia, there’s nothing better in a crisis than poetry.  

 It was a warm spring night on the University of Virginia campus, and dozens of students and faculty members had gathered outside to celebrate Humanities Week and the power of poetry to soothe and console in a crisis. 

Professors Lisa Russ Spaar, Michael Levinson , Clare Kinney and Stephen Cushman organized the event and offered personal definitions of the emergency poem.

Mountain Lake Lodge

The historic, Giles County resort known as the Mountain Lake Hotel, will soon re-open as the new Mountain Lake Lodge. 

A multi-million dollar renovation of the property and the lake, which had all but disappeared, are underway. A new restaurant and a host of new activities will mark the next chapter in the story of the  famous mountain resort.

Robbie Harris reports on a new chapter in the storied history of this mountain retreat.

Sounds of the Mountains

Familiar to NPR listeners, Kevin Kling is a featured performer at the festival.

We continue our look this week at just a handful of the springtime events scheduled throughout the listening area. 

The Sounds of the Mountains Storytelling Festival is an annual event at Camp Bethel in Fincastle.
 

When  Storytellers Alan Hoal and Geraldine Buckley visited WVTF/RADIO IQ, we surprised them by asking them to create a sort-of storytelling duet.

Virginia's Blue Ridge Music Festival

Floyd, Virginia is better known for Mountain music than for classical concerts, but a new Music Festival will bring the two together for eleven days this spring --- all over town.

David Stewart Wiley is the artistic director and conductor of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Music Festival. He says Floyd is an ideal setting for the festival; its variety of venues for a full schedule of performances and workshops, its scenic backdrops, and because of a certain resonance between classical and mountain music.

Movie Palace Goes Digital

Grandin Theatre 3-Day Film Festival

It’s a first for Roanoke’s Grandin Theatre—a film festival designed to showcase  new digital upgrades to the historic, non-profit movie palace that originally opened in 1932.  

The film festival features academy award nominated shorts and a premier of the film The Place Beyond the Pines… as well as several documentary films.

The festival  runs Friday through Sunday at the Grandin Theatre, where the complete schedule is available.
