State GOP Official Resigns After Social Media Incident

The Virginia GOP official who posted disparaging comments about Muslim Americans on social media has resigned.

Over Facebook, state Republican Party treasurer Bob FitzSimmonds dismissed President Obama’s comments observing the end of Ramadan as illogical. The President commended Muslim Americans’ contributions to American society, to which FitzSimmonds responded “Exactly what part of our nation’s fabric was woven by Muslims? What about Sikhs, Animists, and Jainists? Should we be thanking them too?”

This was his third instance of coming under fire for questionable comments made on social media – each time prompted state republican leaders to call for his resignation.

The Washington Post reports that FitzSimmonds sent his letter of resignation to party officials last night, saying “after discussion with several party leaders it seems clear that I will either need to stop posting on social media or step down from my party office.”  He will remain in office until his position is filled, which will likely happen later this month at a state GOP meeting.
