Sandberg Inspires at Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech

During a rainy procession earlier today, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg addressed nearly 30,000 graduates, family members and friends at Virginia Tech’s commencement ceremony.

Two years ago, Sheryl Sandberg’s husband suddenly died of a heart attack on a family vacation.

“I woke up on what I thought would be a totally normal day and my world just changed forever.”

During Tech’s commencement proceedings, Sandberg detailed the journey she has been on since that day.

She also commended the school’s community for its resilience following the mass shooting on campus 10 years ago.

“You are a testament to courage, faith and love, and that’s been true not just for these past 10 years, but for over a century before then. This university means a lot to you graduates, but it also means a lot to America and to the world; so many of us look to you as an example of how to stay strong, brave and true.”

Before joining Facebook in 2008, Sandberg served as chief of staff for United States Secretary of the Treasury Lawrence Summers and helmed a top advertising position at Google.
