Plant Molecule in Solution Lowers Blood Sugar

An acid found in fruits and vegetables actually helps lower blood sugar in humans.  But you have to eat four and a half servings every day to get the benefit. Most people don’t come close --and that can set them up for inflammation related diseases, such as Type 2 Diabetes.

It seems counter intuitive that fruits and vegetables that contain sugar, also hold the key to lowering people’s blood sugar levels. But a plant hormone found in things like bananas, apricots, figs, even honey, contain something called, Abscisic Acid (ABA).

"And what we have found is that Abscisic Acid is a potent modulator of glucose levels."

Josep Bassaganya-Riera is Director of the Nutritional Immunology and Molecular Medicine Laboratory (NIMML) at Virginia Tech.

“Based on the recommended levels of fruits and vegetables in the U.S., only about 8 per cent of the pop is having those 4.5 servings of fruits and vegetables.

Even he’s not always able to accomplish it, despite what he knows about the benefits.

“I try my best….”

The solution is well a ‘solution.’  It’s a new ‘health water’ that will appear in stores next year.  Abcisic Acid is tasteless and has been found safe for humans even at high doses.

“We’ve been exposed to these molecules for centuries through fruits and vegetables and in fact if we were vegetarians we would have higher levels of Abcisic Acid in our system

Just 2 bottles of the new health water should be all most healthy people need to keep their AA levels in good shape. It will be marketed under the name, “Pervida.”

‘Pervida’ is a brand that we created recently based on a Catalan word, which means, ‘for health.’ ‘Per’ is ‘for’ and ‘Vida’ is health in Catalan.

Bassangya-Reira is originally from Barcelona. The price point hasn’t been determined yet, but it will be similar to what other specialized waters go for. The drink will actually be lightly sweetened because the American market is so strong for sweet drinks, but instead of sugar, they’re using the plant-based sweetener, Stevia.
