Clowns Without Borders Host Clown Camp in Cville

Clowns Without Borders

If you’re looking for some offbeat weekend entertainment, the University of Virginia’s School of Nursing suggests a visit to the Heritage Theater Festival on campus.  That’s where Tim Cunningham will host Clown Camp.  Sandy Hausman has details.

Tim Cunningham is a registered nurse and an associate professor at UVA’s School of Nursing.  He’s also a professional clown -- part of a group called Clowns Without Borders – that visits places where children are recovering from a crisis.  He’ll be part of this weekend’s program, which begins Friday at 4:00 in the nursing school’s auditorium.

“We’ll be giving a talk on humanitarian clowning, hospital clowning," he says.

"We have clowns from New York City coming down who work with Clowns Without Borders to help us out with these presentations, and there will be a wine and cheese reception afterwards, and if you’re a nurse you can actually get CEU credit for coming to this presentation. Saturday morning, 9 a.m. there’s a lecture from the great Levahn Hoh about the history of clowns in America.   10:15 – 11:15 our New York City-based clowns are going to be teaching clown workshops for all ages.  It’s going to be super fun, interactive, and then 11:30-12:30 we’re giving a presentation called Behind the Nose, where we talk about what it’s like to give clown performances and presentations in non-traditional settings – in war zones, in hospitals where laughter is needed most but hardest to find.”

The weekend will also feature performances by an international circus star – Barry Lubin, who plays a much-loved character, Grandma on August 4th and 5th at 7 and on the fifth at 2.  Admission to that event is $20.  Other programs are free.  For more information, go to http://heritagetheatre.virginia.edu/clown-circus-presentations
