Fairyland: A Memoir of Her Father

Writer Alysia Abbott did not have the most ordinary of childhoods.

Her mother died when she was two years old, so she was raised by her father—a gay writer—in San Francisco’s bustling cultural scene of the 1970s.   Then the 80s saw the plague of AIDS sweep through her father’s community of friends.

Now, Abbott has written a memoir about her childhood, called “Fairyland”—and she’s also planning speaking engagements this weekend in Roanoke.  She hopes her story will spark more lead to more open minds and hearts about different lifestyles.

Chesapeake Bay Water Quality Slowly Improving

The Chesapeake Bay has been a repository for nitrogen, phosphorous and sediment loads to the point that its water quality is endangered. The Bay Barometer: Health and Restoration in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed is a report from the Chesapeake Bay Program that looks at ecological markers, like underwater grasses and fish, to measure progress in restoration goals.

Recount Set for AG Race

Richmond Circuit Court

A Richmond Court has heard preliminary arguments that set the stage for the recount in the Virginia Attorney General's race, which was decided by the closest statewide margin in modern Virginia history.  

The proceedings took much of the day because attorneys for Senator Mark Obenshain, who called for the recount, asked the court to outline specific guidelines.

Body Found During Search for Missing Lynchburg Teen

In Lynchburg, a woman's body was found this morning in the area where the search for 18-year old Jamisha Gilbert was taking place.

Lieutenant Dave Gearhart of the Lynchburg Police Department addressed the media at a news conference just after 3 p.m. 

Meantime, searchers continued combing the Pleasant Valley Road area between U.S. 460 and Concorde Turnpike.  That's where Jamisha Gilbert's wrecked Honda Accord was found on Friday.  She had last been seen at about 1 a.m. Friday.

Living Wage Job Gap

Virginia Organizing is out with its annual Job Gap report.  The report compares the number of job seekers to the number of jobs that pay a living wage. 

 

Jill Reese, with “Alliance for a Just Society” says living wage jobs are few and far between.

“Over half of job openings in Virginia pay less than $18.59 an hour.  That’s the living wage for a single adult.  More than four out of five pay less than $34.27 an hour-the living wage for a single adult with two children.”
