Birds of Paradise

Birds of Paradise are an exotic family of feathered friends found only in Papua New Guinea, but this summer, some of them have landed in the trees on Charlottesville’s downtown mall.  

Male Birds of Paradise are perhaps the prettiest creatures of their kind – with crazy, colorful plumage, precision dance moves and a piercing song that appeals to the less colorful females.

Who is Bradley Manning?

In May of 2010 an American soldier named Bradley Manning was arrested in Iraq and accused of leaking hundreds of classified documents and secret diplomatic cables to the publisher of Wikileaks, Julian Asange. Manning was held, in solitary confinement, at a military prison in Quantico, Virginia for nine months.  His clothes and glasses were taken away, and he was subject to what a United Nations observer called cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.

UVA Astronomer Wins Major Prize in Astronomy

A University of Virginia professor has won the Asian equivalent to the Nobel Prize for his research on energy, magnetism and black holes.  The news came by e-mail, and John Hawley is still buzzing.

“I grew up in the Gemini and Apollo era, and that was very exciting.  I had a cardboard box spaceship like many of my generation, and I was also inspired by reading the science essays that were written by  Isaac Asimov," he said.

Keeping VA's Food Banks Stocked for Summer

Hunger pangs may be a sign to raid the refrigerator, order carryout, heat up some leftovers, or head to your favorite restaurant. 

But thousands of Virginia children don't have that option.  In fact—and it’s a little-known fact—area food banks throughout the Commonwealth are in greater need of supplies over the summer than over the holidays, when most food drives take place.

Since 2006, there's been a 56-percent increase in the need for serving the hungry. And as Governor McDonnell explains, it's harder to restock food banks during this time of year than any other.
