CityWorks (X)po starts this week in downtown Roanoke.  It’s an annual event, a summit actually, for people passionate about creating vibrant and dynamic communities.

CityWorks (X)po is dubbed as a place-making event—bringing together entrepreneurs, community organizers…really, anyone interested in boosting connectivity within and between localities.

This year's speakers include new media scholars, investors, authors, a chef, experts in recreation and transportation.

A food desert is a neighborhood with no supermarkets – a place where you can’t buy fresh fruits or vegetables.  The small corner stores carry canned and dried food that keeps well on the shelf but is less nutritious than fresh produce, often high in fat and sugar. 

For a city of its size, Richmond, Virginia is the worst food desert in the nation, but an effort is underway to fix that problem.

D-Day Memorial in Bedford Plans Memorial Day Tribute

Many Virginians will enjoy picnics and getting together with friends and family this holiday weekend.  And some will find the time to remember the true meaning behind Memorial Day. 

The National D-Day Memorial in Bedford will begin its Memorial Weekend festivities with a patriotic concert Saturday night.  April Cheek-Messier is Co-president of the memorial.
