Tax Suit Raises Conflict of Interest Questions

The U.S. attorney’s office is investigating a Richmond area company that makes face cream and nutritional supplements. 

It’s called Star Scientific, and a complaint was filed in federal district court alleging the firm made false and misleading statements and failed to disclose potentially illegal transactions. 

The company says it has done nothing wrong. 

Meanwhile, reporters are finding links between Star Scientific and two of Virginia’s top political leaders – Governor Bob McDonnell and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli.

Medicaid Expansion Debate

Just after presumptive Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe made a statement about his desire to implement Medicaid expansion, Governor McDonnell and McAuliffe's GOP opponent have responded. 

McAuliffe would like to see Medicaid expanded as soon as possible. "I have consistently said that we need to have the Medicaid expansion here in Virginia. First and foremost it would cover 400,000 - 500,000 Virginians--would get access to quality healthcare next year. It's important socially, morally, it's the right thing to do," he said.

Fox Hound Training Preserves

The public comment period is now open on the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries’ proposed new regulations for Fox Hound training preserves.  

Fox Hunting has a long history in Virginia, but in the 1980s increased land development limited where hunters could train their dogs in the skill of the chase. 

That's when what are known as Fox Hound Training Preserves were created; privately owned enclosures where the dogs could practice.  Today there are 37 preserves in 22 counties, ranging from 100 acres to around 800, mostly in southeastern Virginia.

VA's Gubernatorial Race: Identity Issues

There are still eight long months before Virginians head to the polls to choose a new governor, but Quinnipiac University's Peter Brown expects the race to about as tight then as it is now.

And  that may have a lot to do with candidate identity—or the lack thereof—when it comes to Republican Ken Cuccinelli and Democrat Terry McAuliffe.
