  Members of a Richmond City Council work group did not give their stamp of approval to a cigarette tax Thursday - pushing off the decision to a later date. The conversation comes after the city recently passed an increase to the meals tax.


When Richmond City Council voted to increase the meals tax to help pay for new schools, it was controversial. Many asked: Why don’t we tax cigarettes? So Councilman Parker Agelasto submitted an additional proposal to do just that.

Virginia’s capital city is raising its meals tax. The money is earmarked to help fix the city’s crumbling schools. Richmond City Council voted late Tuesday night 7 to 2. It was a long and contentious meeting.

Richmond City Council met Monday night to discuss a proposed bump to the city’s meals tax. The Mayor is calling for the tax increase as a way to raise money for Richmond’s crumbling schools and local restaurant owners are pushing back.

Richmond, though, isn’t the first locality in Virginia to turn to the meals tax for education.
