Va Prisons Make Plates and Model Workers

It’s one of the state’s largest companies, with $50 million in sales each year.  It pays workers less than a dollar an hour, but for every job that opens, ten people apply.  You may never have heard of it, but chances are you own one of its products. 

Virginia Correctional Enterprises makes  license plates for state residents and the State Department in DC.  It also molds model workers like 52-year-old Alexander Parker.

Social Media & Privacy Issues

A bereaved father is calling on the Governor to sign legislation allowing parents to have access to their deceased minor child’s social media accounts.

Service providers had rebuffed Ricky Rash of Nottoway when he asked them for help after his son died in 2011.  He also hopes the new state law will inspire federal legislation.

Rash has been searching for answers after his son, Eric, committed suicide.  

The 15-year-old honor student planned to attend Virginia Tech and Harvard Law School, and his sudden death stunned everyone.

Cigarette Smuggling

Over the last few weeks, Governor McDonnell has been scrutinizing 812 bills sent to him by the General Assembly.  Among them is a package of legislation to penalize “possession with the intent to distribute” a legal product.  Its goal is to stop the traffickers of contraband cigarettes, who’ve made millions of dollars while the Commonwealth loses revenue.
