A construction site accident at Virginia Tech last week, once again highlights the importance of safety measures at commercial construction sites.

Five people suffered non-life threatening injuries, when a hydraulic scaffold collapsed and fell about 25 feet. No word yet on the cause of that accident.

Falls by workers are one of the major causes of fatalities on construction sites. And while there have long been fall prevention regulations for commercial construction, OSHA recently implemented safety requirements for RESIDENTIAL construction as well. 

Virginia's Endangered Places

Preservation Virginia’s 2013 list of endangered places ranges from 12 acres of old growth hardwoods to century-old schools built for Africa American students.

The Wytheville birthplace of former First Lady Edith Bolling Wilson needs repairs and financial support. A Page County school that housed government offices for nearly eighty years may be knocked down and replaced with a parking lot. A graveyard and archeological site in Danville may become an industrial site.

Virginia Tech

Doors officially opened this week at the new home of Hillel at Virginia Tech.  These centers for Jewish student life are familiar to many college campuses across the country.  

Virginia Tech’s new Malcolm Rosenberg Hillel Center will not only be a gathering place for study and celebration, it will be a legacy for the next generation.

If you follow world news, it’s easy to get discouraged - to feel helpless in the face of so much violence, suffering and destruction, but a group of Virginia builders have found a way to improve conditions and to raise spirits.

The historic, Giles County resort known as the Mountain Lake Hotel, will soon re-open as the new Mountain Lake Lodge. 

A multi-million dollar renovation of the property and the lake, which had all but disappeared, are underway. A new restaurant and a host of new activities will mark the next chapter in the story of the  famous mountain resort.
