A bipartisan group of Virginia lawmakers is fighting to win federal recognition of six tribes in the commonwealth.
The tribes have treaties dating back to the 1600s. But there 's a catch: the agreements are with the King of England. Even now, the UK recognizes and honors these American tribes, while the US government doesn't. That's partly because in 1924, a law was passed that declared Virginia contained no Native Americans and wiped the commonwealth's record books of their history.
As the 17-year cicadas emerge from the ground, millions of birds will be feasting – and a few people plan to join the party. They're harvesting, cooking and eating these insects which experts say are high in protein, and low in fat and cholesterol. Clever cooks have even incorporated cicadas into tacos and pizza, sushi, chili and chocolate chip cookies.
Experts say that due to the prolific use of pesticides it is not recommended to eat any bug without knowing its origins are safe.
Valedictory exercises give universities a chance to hand out awards and thank people before the main graduation – and they’re not always well attended, but this year’s speaker drew a huge crowd to the University of Virginia -- and as Sandy Hausman reports -- Stephen Colbert did not disappoint.
At a reception beforehand, Colbert was gracious, posing for photos with more than a hundred students and parents who were clearly pumped. We spoke with Ben Hemenway, Danielle McKia, Erin Abdel-- razaq and Ariana Parsons.
