Roanoke Symphony Broadcasts for the 2019-2020 Season

The 46th anniversary of RSO broadcasts continue on WVTF Music.

Celebrating America: Opening Night
On WVTF Music - Friday, October 11 at 2pm
Masterworks opening night recorded at the Berglund Performing Arts Theatre.

Enjoy a dazzling ode to our nation as the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra celebrates America. Join Maestro Wiley as he explores composer George Gershwin's cinematic An American in Paris. We'll also feature the inventive composition of Grammy award-winning composer Michael Dougherty. In his new work, Night Owl America, audiences will journey into rail history accompanied by nostalgic photographic images from the O. Winston Link collection. The broadcast will finish with masterful pianist Yuliya Gorenman performing the popular Rhapsody in Blue.

Mozart and Strauss Celebration
On WVTF Music - Friday, November 29 at 2pm

Masterworks performances recorded at Shaftman Performace Hall in Roanoke’s Jefferson Center.

Enjoy the exuberance of Mozart's Marriage of Figaro and the beautifully energetic melody of the iconic Symphony No. 39 in E-flat Major. We close the broadcast with Richard Strauss's Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. Originally written for a play intermingled with music, dance and singing, the piece completes a playful evening of music.

Holiday Pops!  
On WVTF Music - Friday, December 20 at 2pm

The RSO Holiday Pops is a beloved annual holiday event in Virginia with more than 250 performers on stage. Join the RSO Chorus, Virginia Tech Chorus, Roanoke Valley Children's Choir with the Roanoke Syphony Orchestra as we kick off the holiday season. Hear an unbeatable concert experience captured at the Salem Civic Center.

Happy Birthday, Beethoven!
On WVTF Music - Friday, February 28 at 2pm  
Masterworks performances recorded at Shaftman Performace Hall in Roanoke’s Jefferson Center.

Experience the nobility and genius of Beethoven in the masterful Symphony No. 5 in C Minor. Kelley Mikkelson presents the beautiful French masterpiece, Eduoard Lalo's Cello Concerto. We'll also enjoy Beethoven's Overture to Fidelio.

Transcendant Mozart
On WVTF Music - Friday, April 10 at 2pm  
Masterworks performances recorded at Shaftman Performace Hall in Roanoke’s Jefferson Center.

Float away to a place of peaceful rest. Mozart's final masterpiece will powerfully stir your soul and restire your spirit. We'll also hear Mozart's Serenade "A Little Night Music" and Ave Verum Corpus.

Heroic Symphony
On WVTF Music - Friday, May 15 at 2pm 

Internationally renowned guest, Kinga Augustyn, performs the Bruch Violin Concerto. The season finishes with our tribute to the Beethoven anniversary season with Symphony No. 3 Eroica.
