Virginia Firefighters Tackle Wildfires

Firefighters with the Virginia Department of Forestry had a busy weekend battling at least six significant fires.

The fires were reported in Buchanan, Dickenson, Russell, and Scott Counties and are threatening at least 60 structures.  VDOF officials say the fires have burned more than 1,000 acres and three of the fires have been contained.  John Campbell is a VDOF spokesman.  He says there have been more wildfires in the first 111 days of this year than occurred in all of last year.  And the acres burned so far this year are 2 1/2 times greater than those burned last year.
