Virginia Democrats Call for Republicans to Repudiate Trump's Comments on Judge

Democrats in Virginia are calling on Republicans to repudiate comments from Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who says a federal judge is unfit to rule in a civil case against him because he has Mexican heritage.

Appearing at the Arlington Democratic Committee headquarters, three Democratic members of the General Assembly called on Republicans to repudiate Trump’s comments.

“I hope that all Republican elected officials in the General Assembly especially will also condemn the angry and ugly rhetoric from Donald Trump because I’m not hearing a tidal wave of opposition to what Trump has said," Delegate Alfonso Lopez said.

Democratic Senator Scott Surovell says it’s not enough for Trump to say he’ll stop talking about the judge.

"Donald Trump is finally listening to his lawyers, who probably told him it was really stupid to attack the judge who’s judging your case and as a practicing lawyer I would have fired a client who did that to me," Surovell said.

Prince William County Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart says he is standing by his candidate. “Trump did not say anything racist. Trump was just concerned that this judge is a member of La Raza, which is an organization that his sympathetic toward illegal immigrants, including those who commit crimes."

For Stewart, this is an issue that may last longer than the next few months. That’s because he’s planning on challenging the Republican establishment as a candidate for governor next year.
