Panel Round One

PETER SAGAL, HOST:

We want to remind everybody they can join us most weeks right here at the Chase Bank Auditorium in downtown Chicago, Ill. For tickets and more information, just go over to wbez.org. And you can find a link at our website if you prefer, which is waitwait.npr.org. Right now, panel, time for you to answer some questions about this week's news.

Luke, people love their dogs. Many of them - many dog owners buy pet insurance to cover expenses in case of an injury to their dog. But pet owners in Canada are furious that their policies from one company don't cover injuries caused by what?

LUKE BURBANK: If I use my dog as a sort of jumping off point, it would be injuries sustained while a deep, deep exploration of one's own backside.

(LAUGHTER)

SAGAL: That'd be terrible if your dog was doing that and all of a sudden. Oh, God. I'm stuck. I'm stuck with my nose in here...

BURBANK: That's really my main reason I don't do that. I'm not flexible enough. But OK...

HELEN HONG: You know, in some places that's called the Mexican thing.

(LAUGHTER)

BURBANK: Can I have a hint, Peter?

SAGAL: Your dog's obsession with his tennis ball is like a pre-existing condition.

BURBANK: Playing fetch? Running after things?

SAGAL: Yes. Jumping, running, slipping, tripping or playing.

(SOUNDBITE OF BELL)

BURBANK: What?

PETER GROSZ: So actually, butt exploration is covered.

(LAUGHTER)

SAGAL: It is actually the one thing.

BURBANK: Well, good news for Rudy, my Labrador Retriever.

SAGAL: Canada's largest pet insurance company, Pet Secure, claims that their no running, no jumping, no playing policy is standard across the injury. But dog owners are complaining. It pretty much excludes any injury that a dog may suffer, right, because that's what dogs do. They run, they play.

GROSZ: Who's a conniving insurance company? Who is? Who is?

(LAUGHTER)

SAGAL: Cat owners are equally upset because their policies exclude most common cat activities, which include, quote, "lying around," and, quote, "plotting our deaths."

(SOUNDBITE OF REBIRTH BRASS BAND SONG "ALL BLUES")

SAGAL: Coming up, dads whose dad bods aren't the most embarrassing thing about them. It's our Bluff The Listener game. Call 1-888-WAIT-WAIT to play. We'll be back in a minute with more of WAIT WAIT... DON'T TELL ME from NPR. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
