Forum Features Three Candidates Vying for Cantor's Vacant Seat

In a recent forum, candidates for Virginia’s 7th Congressional District presented differing views on the Affordable Care Act, federal spending, and immigration.

Republican Dave Brat, Democrat Jack Trammell and Libertarian James Carr attended a forum held by the Goochland County Chamber of Commerce Thursday at Benedictine College Preparatory in Richmond.

Brat criticized the Affordable Care Act as “crushing job creation” and touted his free-market principals, advocating that Washington needs an economist. Trammell said both parties need to work together to reform the Affordable Care Act, and promoted his conservative fiscal values – as a Democrat – and says he’s willing to vote against his party if necessary.

Libertarian Carr criticized Brat on his opposition to illegal immigration, stating that it goes against his free market principals – explaining that the “labor market is part of the free market” and must be applied “to the whole spectrum.”

The candidates were allowed to present their positions on various issues but not to debate each other. Brat and Trammell are set to debate each other later this month at Randolph-Macon College, where they both teach. Carr was not invited to participate.
