FBI Warns Media About ISIS Threats

There have been rumors, grumblings, and conspiracy theories about planned attacks by ISIS or ISIL militants on American soil—but nothing credible.

A recent FBI bulletin sent to media outlets warns that the terror organization is trying to persuade noncombatant sympathizers to execute or kidnap specific groups of American citizens.

The FBI does confirm that based on on-line postings and statements by the “Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant,” ISIL has told supporters that they should view members of the U.S. media as legitimate targets for retribution as the U.S.-led strikes against the terrorist group continues.

The FBI bulletin says ISIL is urging American Muslims to kill journalists and media personalities—or, if they are overseas, kidnap and take them to Syria to be held captive. But other published reports note that this isn't limited to reporters.

Law enforcement and military personnel in the U.S. have also been warned that they are targets for “home grown" terrorists. One memo not released by the FBI conveys ISIL’s statement that children should be off limits unless caught in the crossfire. Although an FBI spokesperson could not go on the record, it was emphasized that citizens should not live in fear, but should be aware of their surroundings and current events, and mindful that there are people living on U.S. soil with violent intentions—as proven by 9-11.
