CNU Poll: Northam-Periello Neck and Neck, Gillespie Leads GOP

NPR

Virginia’s gubernatorial race is heating up with just over two months to go until the election to decide party nominees.

The latest survey from Christopher Newport University suggests that the Democratic side of the race looks to be much more competitive than previously thought.

Dr. Rachel Bitecofer helped conduct the survey:

“For a long time there was a frontrunner in that race, and that was Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam. But, what we have found is that a late entry, Tom Perriello, who is a former member of Congress from Virginia, has actually surged to a dead even race.”

On the Republican side of things, former Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie appears to be well ahead of state senator Frank Wagner and former Donald Trump campaign chairman Corey Stewart.

“He is probably best known to Virginia voters when he ran for the Senate and he had a very competitive Senate race. So, he’s got fairly high name recognition and its showing. He was pretty far ahead of his closest challengers in the Republican primary.”

Additionally, the survey looked into comparisons between the Virginia governor’s race and last year’s presidential election and found that Democrats who voted for Hillary Clinton prefer Northam, while Bernie Sander supports favor Perriello.
