A Changing of the Guard in the 7th District

Virginia Republican David Brat is now officially "Congressman David Brat."

The majority of the candidates who won on November Fourth have to wait until January to be sworn in, but not Brat. He upset former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in the G-O-P primary which sent shivers through establishment Republicans at the Capitol. Before joining a Wall Street investment bank, Cantor resigned in order to move Brat ahead of other freshmen in seniority rankings. That could bode well for the commonwealth in the next Congress because two senior Virginia lawmakers are retiring in January. Brat didn't take time to answer many questions, but he says he was feeling elated.

Brat was sworn in by Speaker of the House John Boehner but when pressed, declined to comment on whether or not he'll be supporting Boehner's bid for another term as Speaker. So while newly elected lawmakers continue their freshmen orientation this week and next, Brat will be one of just three new lawmakers casting votes on the House floor.
