Bob McDonnell's Priest Says Former Governor is Hopeful

In Virginia, Bob McDonnell's priest says the former governor is hopeful that an appeals court will overturn his conviction for public corruption.

McDonnell was supposed to report to a federal prison a week from Monday. But now that's not happening, thanks to a ruling from the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Now those closest to the governor say McDonnell is hoping that ruling is an indication of things to come.

"He is still wrapped in the excitement."

That's Father Wayne Ball, pastor of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Richmond, where the former governor is living in the parish house.

"Hope would be the word I would use to describe him. He is hopeful at this point for an ultimate decision in his favor."

Ball says McDonnell was particularly encouraged by the court's decision to speed up the process, expediting the appeal to make a ruling earlier than was previously expected.

"The one thing that has just even moved me after 25 years of priesthood is his faith, which really has never wavered throughout this process."

Maureen McDonnell and the governor are separated, at least for now. She's expected to have her own sentencing hearing next month.
