Man Ray exhibit at UVa - 8.9.10

The University of Virginia Art Museum has a new exhibit on display. It is an interesting mix of photographs and African sculptures centered around the work of modern artist Man Ray. WVTF's Sandy Hausman has more on the man and the show.

President: UVa on solid financial ground - 8.9.10

One week into her tenure as the president of the University of Virginia, Teresa Sullivan took time out to meet with reporters. She wanted to talk about money, but members of the media asked about drinking and last year's murder of a fourth-year student. WVTF's Sandy Hausman reports on what Sullivan had to say.

New book on old-time music - 8.9.10

The names Saford and Clayton Hall may not be familiar to this generation, but these twins, who were born between the mountains in a place called "The Hollow" in Patrick County, played hillbilly music in the 1930s and '40s throughout southwest Virginia and North Carolina. They plucked and yodelled on the Grand Ole Opry stage and almost became famous. Clayton's grandson is Roanoke Times features reporter Ralph Berrier, Jr. Berrier has written a book about his famous relatives. He talked with WVTF's Beverly Amsler.

New Shenandoah Journal - 8.6.10

"Shenandoah: The Washington & Lee University Review" just released its 60th anniversary issue. WVTF's Cara Modisett spoke with Rod Smith, who has been the editor of the journal since 1995, in his office at the Lexington school.

Nurse shortage - 8.6.10

While the General Assembly's joint commission on healthcare continues to study the impacts of reform on Virginia, one issue that weighs heavily on the state is how Virginia's nursing shortage will be further burdened by the law. Virginia Public Radio's Tommie McNeil  has more from our Richmond bureau.

McDonnell town hall meeting - 8.5.10

Governor McDonnell believes that it's closing time for Virginia's state liquor stores. His plan to let private businesses sell alcohol sparked some criticism in Roanoke County last night at the first of several town hall meetings on government reform. However, as WVTF's Joe Staniunas reports, many in the crowd were more interested in immigration reform.

House of Usher musical - 8.5.10

Woodberry Forest is a small, private school for boys in central Virginia. It is not the kind of place where Broadway musicals are born. However, the school's Chairman of Fine Arts and one of his former students have written a remarkable musical based on Edgar Alan Poe's short story, "The Fall Of The House Of Usher." WVTF's Sandy Hausman has the story.

Menhaden spill - 8.5.10

While crews are cleaning oil from Gulf beaches, a Texas company is removing oily fish from Virginia's shores. A trawler operated by Omega Protein spilled 75,000 menhaden from harvesting nets earlier this week. The firm operates a processing plant on Virginia's northern neck. Omega says it's investigating the cause of the spill, and officials say the dead fish on Buckroe Beach aren't a hazard to public health. The news comes as represenataives from Maine to Florida meet in northern Virgnia to discuss how the menhaden population should be managed. WVTF's Sandy Hausman says the debate is as hot as the weather.

Telemedicine - 8.5.10

Thousands of people from all over Appalachia were given free medical and dental care at this year's Remote Area Medical event in Wise. But with more than 300 days until next year's event, one of the organizers says something called telemedicine could help fill the void. From the program "With Good Reason," Thomas Pierce reports.

Doug Wilder Suggests Another VP for Obama - 8.5.10

Former Virginia Governor Doug Wilder has been making the rounds on the national talk circuit after he wrote an editorial for Politico.com in which he expressed disappointment in Vice President Joe Biden's job performance.  As Virginia Public Radio's Tommie McNeil reports from our Richmond Bureau, Wilder believes President Obama should choose another running mate in 2012.
