Port of Virginia - 7.21.10

If you live in central or western Virginia, you may not give much thought to the state's port at Hampton Roads, but activity there is central to the state's economy. WVTF's Sandy Hausman reports one in nine Virginia jobs is linked to shipping. Economists watching the horizon say business at the port is likely to improve.

MEDCottage - 7.20.10

Think of it as a nursing home room right in your own backyard. The MEDCottage prototype was recently  unveiled at the Roanoke Civic Center and billed as high-tech portable housing that keeps aging relatives close to home. WVTF's Connie Stevens has more.

Small Business Lawsuits - 7.20.10

A legislative commission that advises the General Assembly on small business concerns is considering whether to recommend changes in the process that courts use for civil lawsuits. The Virginia Chamber of Commerce proposed the tort reform package as a means of saving both time and money in lawsuits filed against businesses. Virginia Public Radio's Anne Marie Morgan reports from our Richmond bureau.

Med-tech Grant to Improve Medical Recordkeeping - 7.19.10

Experts agree health care in this country could be much better if we made maximum use of technology. 25 groups in Virginia have now banded together to speed up the adoption of electronic medical records. WVTF's Sandy Hausman reports the federal government is providing nearly $5 million to make it happen here.

New Jobs in Virginia - 7.16.10

Governor McDonnell and Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling have announced 71,500 jobs have been added in Virginia since February, ranking the state third in the nation in job growth. They also say 110 new economic development projects will bring even more money to the state. Virginia Public Radio's Tommie McNeil reports from our Richmond bureau.

New Blue Ridge Cuisine - 7.16.10

Traditional Southern cooking was big on butter, refined flour, sugar, and salt. Grits graced many a breakfast tableand Southern fried chicken, okra, and chess pie were found nowhere else. Now, however, the mountains of Virginia are home to a host of lighter, healthier fare. WVTF's Sandy Hausman reports on a book about the new Blue Ridge cuisine.

Virginia Has a Budget Surplus - 7.15.10

Governor McDonnell says after three years of not reporting a budget surplus, the state is in the black by approximately $220 million. The governor said $18 million dollars of the surplus will be directed to local school districts and $82 million will be applied to a three-percent state employee bonus in December. The rest will be set aside for Virginia's water quality improvement and transportation trust funds. Virginia Public Radio's Tommie McNeil reports from our Richmond bureau.
