RU Band and Symphonic Wind Ensemble

MDA Benefit

The Roanoke Valley Charity Car Show to benefit Muscular Dystrophy will be held March 5, 6, and 7 at the Roanoke Civic Center.  Cars and other vehicles in all categories will be on display, all proceeds going to benefit Muscular Dystrophy research.  ((540) 772-3237)

Symphony Concert in Lexington

The Rockbridge Community Symphony will present their Winter Concert featuring pianist James Pannabecker playing Schumann’s Piano Concerto at Lexington Presbyterian Church. Also featured will be Vaughan Williams’ English Folksong Suite and works by Dvorak, Rameau and Charlie Barnett. The concert will take place Saturday night, March 6th at 7:30 at Lexington Presbyterian Church. Tickets will be available at the door.    

Salem Choral Society

The Salem Choral Society presents the premiere performance of the oratorio JESUS, SON OF OUR FATHER, based on the Gospel of John, conducted by the composer, Aaron Garber, on Saturday, March 6th, at 7:30 pm at the Jefferson Center n Roanoke.  The performance will feature soloists, choirs, and orchestra.  (www.salemchoralsociety.org)

Storytelling Festival

The Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History presents a storytelling festival, KEEPING THE ORAL TRADITION ALIVE on Saturday, March 6th, from 10 am to 2 pm, at the museum on Main Street in Danville.  The festival is free.  (434 793-5644)

ArtJam

Blues in Lynchburg

American Naïve Paintings at the Taubman

A new exhibit, American Naïve Paintings from the Garbisch Collection will be on display at Roanoke’s Taubman Museum, opening on March 5th and running through May 16.  Portraits, landscapes, maritime scenes, and other subjects depicted in simple, direct vitality with vivid colors and designs make this exhibition a real treat.  (Kimberly S. The Romantic Generation Piano Music

The Music Department at Washington and Lee will be present pianists Timothy Gaylard, Shuko Watanabe, and Byron Petty in a faculty recital: The Romantic Generation, on Sunday, March 7th at 3 pm in the concert hall at Wilson Hall.  Music by Chopin and Schumann will be featured in honor of both composers’ bicentennial.

Inside Hanna’s Suitcase

A screening of the film INSIDE HANNA’S SUITCASE will be held on Sunday, March 7th, at 2 pm, at the Beth El Congregation on Old Furnace Road in Harrisonburg, as part of the 2010 Shenandoah Valley Holocaust Education Project.  The story concerns a teacher inspiring her students by following the story of a young Jewish girl during the dark days of the Holocaust.  Admission is free.  (540 434-2744)

OSCAR night at the Paramount

OSCAR night at the Paramount in Charlottesville will benefit the Virginia Film Festival and the Paramount Theater.  The event is one of 51 parties officially sanctioned by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and doors open at 6 on Sunday, March 7th, with viewing of the OSCAR telecast beginning at 8 pm.  (www.theparamount.net)

Benefit for Haiti

Local musicians will be raising funds and “Jammin’ for Haiti” on Sunday, March 7th, at the Floyd Country Store from 2 to 5 pm.  A $5 donation is requested, and all funds go the Red Cross Haiti Fund.

Richmond Ballet in Martinsville

Piedmont Arts presents the Richmond Ballet in recital, Monday, March 8th, at 7 pm at the Martinsville High School Auditorium.  In conjunction with MINDS WIDE OPEN, Virginia celebrates women in the arts, the ballet will perform works choreographed by Stoner Winslett and Jessica Lang.  The performance is also a fundraiser for the ballet company.  (276 632.3221, www.piedmontarts.org)

Lecture on Neighborhood Trees

Virginia Native Plant Society

Banff Mountain Film Festival

TAP (Total Action Against Poverty) in Roanoke will be offering free tax help and tax preparation through April 15th at the TAP Tax Clinic on the 4th Floor at 302 2nd Street. Piedmont Arts Honors Black History Month with Exhibits

In honor of Black History Month, Piedmont Arts in Martinsville, 2 exhibits will be on display through February 20th.

Papers from the Imogene and Isadore Draper Collection of African American Art will be on display in the Piedmont Arts galleries, and Shades and Shapes Part II: Works by Iris Gillespie will be displayed in the Lynwood Artist gallery.

Men Who Cook!

Men Who Cook, a benefit for the Monticello Area Community Action Agency, will be held at the Omni Hotel in Charlottesville on Saturday, April 17th.  More than fifty amateur chefs will prepare hors d’oeuvres and dinner, and there will be a silent auction and other activities.

Art Exhibits at W&L in Lexington

The Williams School of Commerce, Economics and Politics at Washington and Lee in Lexington supports the display of art in public places. To that end, the Williams Gallery presents an exhibit titled Inside Out, paintings by Kathleen Olson through June 30, and Off the Bridge, recent oils and watercolors by Janet Niewald will be on display in the McCarthy Gallery through June 15. Admission to both exhibits is free.
