College Students & Loan Debt

On average, college graduates rack up more than $26,000 in student loan debt by the time they’re out of school, and if Congress fails to act, the federal interest rate on those loans will double July 1st.

To try and get their message across to lawmakers, Virginia Young Democrats and student leaders from Old Dominion University and George Mason University are asking Congressmen Frank Wolf and Scott Rigell to stop the rate hike from happening.

Valedictory exercises give universities a chance to hand out awards and thank people before the main graduation  – and they’re not always well attended, but this year’s speaker drew a huge crowd to the University of Virginia -- and as Sandy Hausman reports -- Stephen Colbert did not disappoint.

At a reception beforehand, Colbert was gracious, posing for photos with more than a hundred students and parents who were clearly pumped.  We spoke with Ben Hemenway, Danielle McKia, Erin Abdel-- razaq and Ariana Parsons.

UVa Professor Helps Children Improve Reading Skills
